If you live in Florida, then there are a few things that you need to know before you start your own garden. Once you have read these tips, you won’t need a green thumb!

How to Plant

The first and obvious step when planting something is digging a hole. Look at your plant and make the hole at least half as wide and deep as its pot is.

Take the plant out of the pot and start loosening the roots very gently.

Hold it at the base with one hand while supporting the root ball with your other hand. Set it down inside the hole.

For the plant to survive its transplanting, the top of the soil around its root ball should be just a little bit higher than the level of the soil. Ensure that is the case before you remove the plant.

Now, fill the hole with water and set the plant back inside it.

Fill the hole with more soil and tamp it in place.

Water until the hole and the soil are thoroughly soaked.

How to Water

There are three types of irrigation that may or may not suit you, depending on the size of your garden.

  1. For Lawns, you should use high pressure irrigation. The best way to achieve that is to use overhead sprinklers since the spray will cover long distances. If you also have a garden adjacent to the lawn, the sprinklers can irrigate it, simultaneously.
  2. Low pressure irrigation is the best way to water container plants and small gardens. For this method, opt for a drip emitter system that will produce one drop at a time. Through this method, most of the water goes to the plant and little is lost to evaporation.
  3. Microjet emitters with spray misters are an alternative you can use. Keep in mind that not all plants like to get their leaves wet, which is why this method would be perfect for such plants. The spray released by these microjets falls right at the soil level, which also means minimal evaporation.
  4. For manual irrigation, you can use a hand-held hose. Soaker hoses are another good option since they can be connected to timers.
Often the best irrigation is a combination of two or more of the methods mentioned above.
